The financial crisis has put many families in tricky, if not dramatic situations. Many are faced with mortgage and loan complications, credits are not that easy to obtain and some have even lost their job. In times like this, your wallet becomes the most sensitive spot and keeping the family budget within limits turns into a real challenge.

While there are many domains where you can cut your spendings, your grocery shopping probably isn't as flexible as your entertainment needs. Still, you can save some cash even when shopping. All you have to do is start to follow the tips we provide below.

Start cooking

You'll be surprised how much money you can save when you're not buying pre-fabricated food. If cooking isn't your strong point, you can always start with something simple.

Avoid going for groceries when you have limited time
This may lead to impulsive and excessive spendings. You should have plenty of time for comparing and shopping and around. Also avoid going for groceries when you're hungry. You will tend to spend more money and get things you don't really need. Stick to your list and avoid buying something you aren't likely to eat during the week.

Cook beforehand to avoid cooking when ou don't have the time or are tired
When you come back home from work, the last thing you want to do is work. Isn't it geat to have something in your fridge that you can quickly warm up for thte whole family? You will be less inclined then to get take-away.

Compare the prices and different shops
See if there are any discounts offered by your local stores, especially on the items you buy frequently. Small savings will add up over time. Check the newspapers and websites concerning the sales and discounts in your area. See if there are any coupons being offered.

Use cash
Use cash when shopping. Set the amount you have to spend and withdraw it from your ATM card before you go shopping. Buying with a credit card is known to cause excessie expenditures because you don't feel the money going away.

Try not to over-cook
Stay within your usual meal portions. Having an excess of perishable food will lead to the food being thrown in the garbage. Alternatively, the extra food can be brought to work the following day - saving you money in having to buy lunch.

Branded and highly advertised products are usually more expensive
Find generic products that have the same nutrition value and taste, but are not as advertised - the price tag is also likely to be lower.
