Inner-city suburbs and beachside suburbs are the most desirable areas for Australian homebuyers and renters, according to research conducted by real estate portal Domain.com.au.

Domain identified the most searched-for locations among would-be homebuyers between April 23 and May 28 2009. In most states, the views of renters and buyers matched up, with the same suburb at the top of both groups’ hit lists.

In New South Wales, top of the list is Paddington, followed by Newtown. In Victoria, inner city Melbourne came up trumps, while in Queensland, Southport on the Gold Coast was the most popular suburb. Inner city Perth was the most commonly searched-for suburb among buyers and renters for Western Australia. In Tasmania, Launceston was the most popular suburb, followed by Burnie, while in the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory the top of the list were central Canberra and central Darwin respectively.

In South Australia, renters and buyers diverged slightly. Beachside Glenelg was ranked number one on buyers’ lists, followed by central Adelaide. For renters, Adelaide was ranked first, and Glenelg second.
