Tips to cool your energy bill

Many households around Australia spend a large proportion of their energy bills on heating and cooling the house. Keeping warm during winter and cool in summer does not have to be an energy drain.

Below are some simple tips to help to save you money, energy and keep your house comfortable all year round. And it’s good for the environment.
  • Try using ceiling fans instead of air coolers or air conditioning. They can also be used in winter to circulate the warm air
  • Dress for the weather. Wear an extra layer and an extra pair of socks in winter
  • Keep all doors and windows shut to keep the heat or cool air inside. In summer, open the windows and doors to catch those cooling breezes
  • Make sure insulation is properly installed and that gaps around doors and windows are sealed to prevent ‘leakage’
  • Check energy rating labels on gas heaters and air conditioners. Choose the right sized unit for your needs
  • Switch off exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms after use. Alternatively, open the windows so you don’t need use the exhaust fans at all
  • Plant deciduous trees around the house. In summer they will shade your home and in winter allow the sun through to warm the place
