Tips to cool your energy bill

Share:
Many households around Australia spend a large proportion of their energy bills on heating and cooling. Yet keeping warm in winter and cool in summer doesn't have to be an energy drain - below are some simple tips to help to save you money, energy and keep your house comfortable all year round:

1) Try using ceiling fans instead of air coolers - these can also be used in winter to circulate the warm air
2) Dress for the weather. Wear an extra layer and an additional pair of socks in the cold
3) Keep doors and windows shut to keep heat or cool air where it should be; in summer, open them up again in the evening to catch those cooling breezes
4) Make sure insulation is properly installed and that gaps around doors and windows are sealed to prevent 'leakage'
5) Check the energy rating labels on gas heaters and air-conditioners and choose the right sized unit for your needs
6) Switch off exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms after use (or open a window and don't use them at all)
7) Plant deciduous trees around the house. In summer they will shade your home and in winter allow the sun through to warm it
